Black Moms for Black Moms...

About Melanin Momtors

Through mentorship we connect these mothers to resources such as parental education, mental health and counseling services, professional development, financial education and life skills.

Through their individual mentoring relationships and connections our young women become confident in their futures and more confident in what they can offer their children.

Why Mentor?

Mentoring is a time-proven strategy that can help young people of all circumstances achieve their potential. Mentors are caring individuals who, along with parents or guardians, provide young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example.  Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Yet one in three young people will grow up without this critical asset.

Additional Information

Thank you for your interest in becoming a #MommyMentor with Melanin Mommies PGH!  We appreciate the help and support our volunteer mentors provide to young moms in our community.

At Melanin Mommies PGH, we require that all volunteers obtain their security clearances/certifications before working with a family.

The following security clearances/certifications are required.

  • Pennsylvania State Police Clearance for volunteers (free)
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance for volunteers (free)
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation      (FBI) report – PDE ($21.35 for volunteers)

Once you have a record of all of your required clearance certifications, please email everything at one time in PDF format to mentor@melaninmommiespgh.org with the subject line: [Applicant Name]’s Clearances.

The length of time it takes to receive your clearance certifications is contingent upon the method you use to apply for them. Applying online will typically result in a faster turnaround time. It is also important to note that all potential volunteers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will be applying for clearances as well. We encourage prospective volunteers to begin applying for their clearances as soon as possible.

You may submit your current clearances as long as they are less than five years old. If you need to renew your security clearances/certifications or obtain them for the first time, use the links below to go directly to the appropriate website.
